Fall is here — time to start the hunt for that perfect pumpkin, take in the beautiful colors of the changing leaves, and dive into the spirit of autumn (preferably into a huge leaf pile). Fall is a time for change, beautiful change, and your journaling can reflect that. Here are 20 fall journaling prompts to get your soul fully enveloped in the autumn shade.

  1. JRNL Fall Writing PromptsGet in touch with your senses. What are the sounds, sights, tastes, feels, and smells of fall? Why are you drawn to these senses?
  2. Think about your favorite fall memory and write about as vividly as you can. What does that memory mean to you now?
  3. Think of the five words you most associate with fall. Pick one word and write a poem about that word.
  4. The leaves are transforming all around. Think about a time you went through a  transformation or made a change in your life and journal about it.
  5. Fall means football season is in full swing. Write about your fondest football memory.
  6. Write about the scariest haunted house you have ever been to. What is the effect of haunted houses? Why do you like or not like them?
  7. Write a story from the perspective of the trees changing colors. How do they feel about fall? What does fall mean to them?  
  8. What is your most memorable Thanksgiving and why? What does Thanksgiving mean to you?
  9. Compile a running list of all the things you are thankful for. Add to this list throughout the season and reflect on your list at the end of fall.
  10. How does autumn affect your mood? Does it make you more relaxed, or more anxious? Why do you feel this way?
  11. Is there a difference between fall and autumn? What do these two words invoke in you and how do they differ? Does it matter?  
  12. What are your favorite fall foods? Is there a specific memory of this food that sticks out in your mind?
  13. How do the shorter days affect your mood?
  14. What is the best Halloween costume you have ever worn? Why did you like it so much?
  15. The leaves primarily change into three colors — red, orange and yellow. Describe three of your friends that personify each color.
  16. What is your favorite fall tradition? What is one thing you HAVE to do every fall?
  17. What was the worst candy you ever received trick-or-treating? Write about your feelings as a child receiving that terrible treat.     
  18. Write about the biggest pile of leaves you’ve ever jumped into. What was the rush of emotions you felt?
  19. Spend time in the woods and record what you see. How are the animals preparing for the changing seasons? What are the sounds and sights around you?
  20. How would you feel if fall was completely eliminated and the seasons changed straight from summer to winter?
